National Center of Afro-American Artists is established.

1968

Founded by Elma Lewis, it is located at 122 Elm Hill Avenue. Its purpose is “to preserve and foster the cultural arts heritage of black peoples worldwide through arts teaching, and the presentation of professional works in all fine arts disciplines.” Lewis is the first director. The Museum of the NCAA is established in 1969. After fires at the original building in 1981 and 1984, the parent organization moves into the museum building at 300 Walnut Avenue, which it had first occupied in 1980.
